Common Paging Problems

Software programs that deal with data communications typically have more problems with configuration due to the wide variety of hardware to support and configuration options. If you do not understand the Paging configuration parameters, you may want to check with your modem manufacturer, Pager Service Provider, someone knowledgeable in data communication within your organization or see if the information presented below helps in determining the correct settings.

Note:  There are too many modems on the market to make it feasible to test the Notification Server with each. The following modems have been tested:

Hayes Accura 14.4

Hayes compatible (no brand) (configured as Hayes Compatible 2400 Baud Modem)

Practical Peripherals 2400

USRobotics Sportster 28.8 (configured as a USRobotics Sportster 14.4)

Proper Modem Installation

If you are using an external modem, make sure it is setup correctly with the correct serial cable. It must be turned on (there should be a power switch somewhere on the modem). If you have tried using a configuration that does not work, you may want to power off and then power on the modem. This will reset some modems. If you are using an internal modem, make sure it is installed correctly. You may want to verify that you can communicate with the modem using some other communication software on your system. If you can determine the correct settings with some other software, you should be able to use the same settings with the Notification Server.

Active Phone Line

Make sure the modem is connected to an active phone line. If you are not hearing a dial tone from the modem speaker, this may indicate the line is not active. Try connecting a phone to the line and see if you get a dial tone. Also, make sure you are supplying the correct phone number. Some phone systems may require a 9 to get an outside line (e.g., 9,555-1212). This would be required for the Pager Service Number not the Pager Number.

Baud Rate

Try using a slower Baud rate such as 300 or 1200. Some Paging Service Providers work better at slower speeds. Line quality/reliability may be better at slower speeds.

Busy Port

If opening of the modem port fails, make sure no other application currently has the port open. Close other applications that may have the port open.

No Matching Modem On List

If your modem is not listed in the Modem list on the Notification Setup window, pick a modem that is similar to the one you are using. You may have to try several different ones to find one that works. You may also want to try no initialization string (such as Generic or Unlisted). If it appears that you cannot locate an initialization string that will work, contact the modem manufacturer for further assistance.

No Available Operator

Make sure someone on the Alert List is available to be notified. If no Operator is configured to receive a notification at the time you are sending one, no one is notified and the Notification Event is deleted.
