Lesson 4: Notification Setup

The Notification capabilities of SmartBatch provide a way to notify Operators (that is, persons) when certain events occur. You create Operators and assign them to Alert Lists. The Alert List is then assigned to an Operation. You do not  assign Alert Lists to Steps or  Jobs. Notification is accomplished by Email (SMTP) by Pager or Mobile phone.

If you plan to use Paging, you need to make sure your paging service provider has an email interface to their pager capabilities.  You send an email to a pager or mobile phone interface.

For Email Notification you will need SMTP services available on the computer where SmartBatch is installed or SMTP services available on your local area network.

Step 1: Set up for Email and Alphanumeric Paging

Select the Notification Setup button from the main window's toolbar. Enter the Send From Address and Mail Server Name.  If necessary, contact your network administrator for the specifics of this information.

Step 2: Creating Operators and their availability

You need to define at least one Operator for Notification to occur. You can have any number of Operators in the database and any number of Operators can be assigned to an Alert List.

1.To create an Operator, right-click on the Operators node in the tree view and select the New Operator menu item.

2.Enter the Operator Name, check the Notify By Page, Email or Mobile phone.

3.Enter the Notification information necessary for each type of notification supported for this Operation (such as an Email Address). The Notify days and time can be set to indicate when an Operator is available to receive a Notification.

4.Use the Apply button to create your entry and exit the Operators Properties window by clicking on the OK button.

Note: If no Operator on an Alert List is available when a Notification event occurs, no one is notified.

Step 3: Assigning Operators to Alert Lists

The Operator you just added will now show up in the Operators list on the Alert Properties window.

1.Add the Operator to the Alert List by double-clicking on the name in the list. The name will now appear in the Operators in this Alert List.

2.Enter in an Alert List name and Description.

3.Click on the Apply button to create the Alert List.
