Working With SmartBatch Data Sources

The Administrator is used to configure your Windows automation processing environment. The Executive Server, Notification Server and Remote Agents use this configuration information to determine when and how to process your configured objects. This configuration information is stored in a SmartBatch data source.  When you first install SmartBatch a database file named sb.mdb is created and used as the default database..  Optionally, you can specify an existing SQL Server database (Express or any other Edition.

Database Product Support

The following database products can be used to host the SmartBatch configuration:

Access
 SQL Server

SmartBatch needs a data source to store its configuration information about Operation, Steps, Jobs, Schedules, etc.  SmartBatch supports the use of the Microsoft Access database by default.  This database can be used in the Free, Lite, Standard and Enterprise versions.   The Access database is required for the Free and Lite Editions of SmartBatch.  The Standard Edition supports SQL Server Express and Access.  With the Enterprise Edition you can use any edition of SQL Server.

Creating A New Database

You create a new data source using the SmartBatch Database Management tool.  This is available from the Start Menu > Programs > SmartBatch > SmartBatch Database Management.

Moving or Migrating Data

SmartBatch provides a tool to move data from one version of the SmartBatch database to the latest version. This tool can also be used to merge data from one to source into another. See Database Migration for more detailed information.
